The current turmoil of global finances has had a direct impact on the UK economy. Unsurprisingly, this has had a subsidiary consequence into the mental state of our UK workforce. Investigative research performed by leading mental health charity (MIND), has highlighted some possible reasons for the increase being directly linked to the pressures of the recession on the workforce.

According to MIND’s poll of over 2,000 UK employees, as a direct result of the recession in the UK:

10% of the workforce has visited their GP (general practitioner or primary care physician).

Only 38% of the workforce says their current employer is providing enough support.

Approximately 20% of individuals blamed their work for making them physically ill.

7% have started on a course of medical therapy for depression.

Approximately 1/3 said employees were competing against one another.

Of course, stress in the workplace is not a new phenomenon that suddenly appeared alongside the recession, stress has for a long time been a workforce issue. However the recession has helped to magnify the stress that the UK workforce is under due to the loss of jobs, excess workloads and the uncertainty that the recession has and will continue to cause.
